Israeli Airstrikes in Lebanon Amid Ceasefire Tensions

On Friday night, Israel carried out more than 20 airstrikes in southern Lebanon, marking the most intense series of bombings since the ceasefire agreement was signed on November 27.

According to Lebanon’s National News Agency and the Janoubia portal, the attacks targeted areas stretching from the southern border to the Litani River region, particularly on the outskirts of the town of Aishiyeh.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that the strikes were conducted “based on intelligence information” and were aimed at Hezbollah military sites. In their statement, the IDF indicated that weapons and rocket launchers belonging to the Shiite movement had been identified in these locations, deeming them a threat to the security of the Israeli state and a violation of the agreements between Israel and Lebanon.

“We will continue to operate to eliminate any threat to the State of Israel and to prevent any attempt by Hezbollah to reestablish and rebuild itself,” stated Israeli military authorities.

The ceasefire, which came into effect after more than a year of escalating tensions, was part of a settlement plan proposed by the United States. This agreement stipulated that the Lebanese Army would occupy the southern territories of the country within 60 days, while Hezbollah’s forces and infrastructure were to be relocated north of the Litani River.

In turn, Israel committed to withdrawing its forces from Lebanese territory, though it maintained a military presence in five border positions.

However, the implementation of the agreement has proven problematic. The Lebanese Army has not fully secured Hezbollah’s withdrawal or dismantled its infrastructure in the south, which has kept tensions high in the region and led to this recent escalation of Israeli attacks.

The situation in southern Lebanon remains volatile, and Israel’s military actions could have significant repercussions on regional dynamics, as well as on relations between the two countries.

The international community is closely monitoring these developments, concerned that they could further destabilize a region already marked by prolonged conflict.
